Carbon Steel vs Stainless Steel: How to Choose
Both are iron-based steels, but they solve different problems. Choosing correctly is mostly a question of environment, hygiene requirements and budget.
Corrosion resistance
Carbon steel rusts in humid or chemical environments unless it is painted, galvanized or oiled. Stainless steel contains at least 10.5 percent chromium, which forms a passive oxide layer and repairs itself after scratching. For outdoor, coastal, chemical or food-contact use, stainless wins.
Strength and cost
- Carbon steel: higher strength per dollar, easy to weld, the default for structures, machinery and pipelines.
- Stainless steel: 3-5 times the material price, but lower lifetime cost in corrosive service.
- A common compromise: carbon steel structure with stainless cladding or liners.
Fabrication differences
Stainless work-hardens and needs lower cutting speeds, thorough pickling and passivation after welding, and dedicated brushes to avoid carbon steel contamination. Carbon steel fabricates with standard tooling.
What we supply
Carbon steel coil, plate and pipe for structural and mechanical use, and stainless steel sheet, coil and pipe in 201, 304, 316L and 430. Tell us the working environment and we will quote the right material, not the most expensive one.
